Instagram announces the abandonment of its application for the Apple Watch

  • Instagram for Apple Watch no longer exists. The social network has abandoned support today by offering version 39 of its application on iOS. The application is only available on iPhone now, in addition to Android smartphones.

Here is the Instagram release sent to iPhoneAddict:
  • "The Instagram app for Apple Watch will no longer be available as a stand-alone experience once users upgrade to Instagram version 39 on iOS, released April 2, 2018. We are committed to providing users with the best experience with their Apple products and we will continue to explore ways to achieve this on all platforms. Users with an Apple Watch will continue to enjoy a great Instagram experience through various rich and varied notifications. "
  • Why this abandonment today? Instagram explains that the application for the Apple Watch has been compiled with the watchOS 1 SDK. Apple has just announced that application updates compiled with the watchOS 1 SDK are no longer accepted since April 1st. developers now need to upgrade to the watchOS 2 SDK at a minimum. Instagram does not seem to want to continue development and prefers to end its application for the Apple Watch.
  • This abandonment of a popular application is a blow for Apple. Several groups have already abandoned their applications for the Apple Watch in recent months, including Twitter, Google Maps, eBay or Amazon.
